Chain-link fencing is a woven wire that’s usually galvanized to reduce corrosion and enhance its durability. It also may be vinyl coated, which increases its style and strength.
To install a chain-link fence, you’ll need a few supplies: mesh, top rail, and posts. The posts are typically made of metal, though wood, concrete, and vinyl fence posts are also available. They’re sold in two diameters, a wider 2 3/8-inch for corner and end posts and a smaller 1 5/8-inch for line posts.
Posts are an essential part of the fence and must be set at least 2 feet below the ground to ensure that the fence is stable. Depending on the type of metal used, posts can cost anywhere from $7.25 to $30.
Before digging holes for the posts, call 811. You’ll need a post-hole digger or two-person auger to dig holes that are three times wider than the diameter of the posts.
After digging the holes, place the posts in the holes and level them with a level. If you’re using angle iron posts, add a coat of paint or stain to the surface before you put them in the ground.
Once the posts are in the ground, fill them with concrete. Make sure to pour enough concrete so the bottoms of the posts are plumb. Check them for plumb after every few shovelfuls. Once the concrete dries, you’ll be ready to finish setting the posts in the holes and install them to the fence.
To build a chain-link fence, you’ll also need a stretch bar and a nut and bolt to connect the tension bar to the fence fabric. The stretch bar is a length of tension wire that’s equal to the linear footage of the fence; a nut and bolt is a ring that slips over the top of the tension bar.
Steps to metal fencing a chain-link fence
To start a chain-link fence, roll out a roll of chain link on the outside or the side you want it to cover. Next, weave the rolls together to make one continuous stretch of woven chain link from one end post to the other. This can be done by hand if you’re short on time, or with a tool called a come-a-long.
When you’re done, use the nut and bolt to attach the end of the chain link fabric to a terminal post. If you’re working with long stretches of the fence, you can leave the fabric on the ground and lean it against the fence posts as you stretch the fabric.
When you’re done, the fence will look like it was made by a professional, and your property will be protected from intruders. The process can be a little difficult, but it’s worth it for the security.
