How to Care For a Cedar Fence?

Cedar fences can last up to 30 years if you take good care of them. They’re a great addition to any property, and they’re relatively inexpensive. However, like any other wood fence, they will deteriorate if you don’t care for them properly. Fortunately, there are a few simple ways that you can keep your cedar fence looking its best year-round!

Clean and Stain

To keep your cedar fence looking good, it needs to be cleaned regularly. This will remove any dust, dirt or other debris that can harm your fence over time. You can do this yourself by using a garden hose and a scrub brush. A power washer can also be used if you’re comfortable with abrasive chemicals and have the proper equipment. Be sure to read the manufacturer’s instructions carefully and set the pressure (psi) level to a lower setting that won’t damage your cedar fence.

Use a Wood Brightener or Bleach Based Solution

A bleach-based wood brightener or mildew killer is a great way to keep your cedar fence looking good. The bleach-based cleaner is safe to use on your fence and will help eliminate any mold, mildew or other fungi that has built up over the years. This will make it easier to stain or paint your fence.

Apply a New Stain or Sealer

To protect your fence from the elements, you should re-stain it every few years. This will provide a barrier against the elements and keep it looking fresh and vibrant. A stain will also help to highlight the natural grain of the wood and prevent fading and warping over time.

It’s important to use a good quality wood fence stain. You can use an oil-based stain that will provide a rich color and add depth to your fence. You can also use a wax-based fence stain that will help to protect the wood from the elements.

You can re-stain your fence as often as you want, but it’s best to do so once a year to ensure that the stain remains effective and long lasting. A good wood fence stain will provide a protective layer against UV rays, water damage and the growth of mold and mildew.

Re-seal the fence

Once your cedar fence is cleaned and re-stained, you’ll need to seal it. A sealer will protect the wood from splintering and cracking caused by weather conditions. It’s recommended to do this every three to five years, depending on your climate and how exposed to the elements your fence is.

Plant Landscaping Around the Fence

It’s easy to plant landscaping around your cedar fence, but you need to make sure that it is not too close to the fence. You should also cut any weeds and vines that may grow on the fence’s surface.

Trim the Fence and Replace Boards

If you notice any boards rotting or broken, you should replace them as soon as possible. This will save your cedar fence from serious damage and prevent it from falling apart later on.
