How to Cut Chain Link Fence Post?

Whether you’re installing a chain link fence or need to repair or remove a section, you may need to cut the fence post. It’s usually a simple and inexpensive process, but you’ll want to be prepared with the right tools.

Use a sharp pair of bolt cutters to cut through the chain links. You can find them at most hardware stores for under $50. Alternatively, you can use a reciprocating saw.

Position the cutters at either end of the section you’re cutting, snipping through one chain link at a time. This makes it easier to keep track of your measurements and also keeps the bolts from getting in the way of your cuts. If you’re cutting a lot of fences, you’ll likely need more than one pair of bolt cutters.

Unweave the Fence Before Cutting

If you’re only looking to trim or remove a portion of your chain link fence, consider unweaving it instead of cutting it. It’s a much faster process and leaves the other side of the fence intact so you can use it in the future.

Start by removing the clamps from one of the corner or end posts, one end at a time. Depending on your specific situation, you’ll need to make sure there are no people nearby when you’re working on this part of the fence.

Then, if you’re unable to get your hands on a jackhammer, you can try using a farm jack to remove the post from the ground. However, be sure to use a chain to hitch the post to the jack. Otherwise, the post can go flying.

Adjust the Height

If your chain link fence is too long, you can reduce it by reducing the number of links. It’s a simple process that can be done with just a few cuts.

For example, if you’re reducing your fence by a few feet, you can do this in two steps: First, use the pliers to unsnap the ties that connect the chain link to the rods and wires. This will allow the chain link to come apart easily.

Repeat this process for each section until you’ve reduced the length of your fence. Once you’re finished, reconnect the ties that connect the chain link to both the rods and the wires.

Install the New Fencing

Before you replace the entire section, take a look at your fencing to see if there are any broken sections. This can indicate that the fence is damaged in a way that will require replacement. Typically, you’ll need to replace the rails and posts or the entire fence if the broken sections are severe enough to be damaging.

If you’re repairing the fence, be sure to spray it with lubricant before working on it to make it easier to work on and remove. It’s also a good idea to wipe down the hinge bolts so they aren’t as hard to remove later on.
