How to Install Chain Link Fence Gate?
A chain link fence gate is a simple structure that can be installed by the homeowner. A few tools and a little patience will make installing this type of fence gate a breeze. There are also two types of gates, one with a flat top and one with a slanted bottom. Both are easy to install, but they do require a bit of planning and effort.
The first step is to measure the fence to determine the length and height. The gate should be set back about four inches from the property line. If there is a house on the property, the perimeter of the fence will be parallel to the house. If there is not, the perimeter will be perpendicular to the house. You should mark the string line for each post and measure the distance from the corner of the fence to the intersection. This will be your reference for determining the exact location of the next post.
After you’ve measured the fence, you’ll need to cut the chain link to fit the new post. It is recommended that you use a chop saw or a come-along cable puller winch to do this. Be careful with children and bystanders who are around when cutting or working with chain link. You should wear goggles for this project.
When cutting the chain link, be sure to have the blade sharp. Using pliers will help to keep the chain link from springing back. If the chain link is too thin, you can disconnect it from the gate post. You can then peel it back to the post.
Before you begin installing the fence, you’ll need to prepare the ground. You can either dig holes for the posts or buy ready-made concrete. If you are using a ready-made cement mix, it is best to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. You’ll need six inches of concrete for each gate post, plus six inches of concrete for the end posts.
Then you’ll need to install a tension bar. The tension bar will help you attach the fence material to the post more securely. Once you have inserted the tension bar into the last link of the chain link fabric, you should use a socket wrench to tighten it. You should also insert the tension bar into the brace bands on the end posts. Depending on the size of the fence, you may need four bands.
You can also attach the gate to the fence. The gate can be hinged to the uphill side to keep the downhill side from scraping the ground. However, this creates a small triangular gap. For this, you need to position the gate so that the hinge straps are flat on the top and bottom of the gate. Then, you can rotate the gate so that the hinge can operate.
Once the fence is installed, you’ll need to put in tension bands and rail end cups. This is required to keep the gate from sliding off the fence. You can then place the rail caps over the posts and secure them with the bands. If the fence is on a slope, you can use stakes to hold the posts in place while you work.
