How to Install Chain Link Fence Posts?
Chain link fence posts come in two sizes. The largest is 8 inches diameter and the smaller is 6 inches diameter. These posts are buried about one-third of their height and are used to anchor a chain link fence. They are available in galvanized steel and aluminum. Both are light weight, but aluminum is slightly easier to work with.

If you are installing a chain link fence on your own, there are several steps to follow. The first step is to mark the fence line. You can either use spray paint or masonry guide string. Your local assessor’s office can provide the information you need.
Next, prepare your chain link fence material. Chain link fence fabric is sold in rolls, usually in five foot lengths. It can be woven into a chain link mesh. To install it, you will need a tension bar. This makes the end of the chain link fence rigid. In addition, the tension bar provides attachment to the end post and the rails.
Next, you will need to drill the holes for your posts. Chain link fence post holes should be 6-8 inches wide and 4-6 inches deep. Use a post hole digger to dig these holes. A helper can hold the post while you dig and fill the hole. Concrete can also be used for these posts.
Once you have your posts, cut the top rail to the right length. You may want to use a pipe cutter to do this. Make sure that the top rail fits into the rail end cup. Install the top rail until you reach the next terminal post. Be sure that the top rail will fit tightly between the last length of top rail and the rail end. Apply a 5/16″ x 1-1/4″ carriage bolt to secure the top rail.
For the line posts, it is recommended to set them 1/8″-1/4″ off the string. This will account for any differences in the diameter of the post. Check the height of the posts after they have been set. Adjust the height as necessary.
The tension bar is a vertical bar woven into the fence material. It will make it easier to attach the fabric to the posts. It should be inserted through the first row of chain link diamonds and through the brace bands on the end posts. After it is inserted, you can tighten the tension bar with a socket wrench.
Chain link fence fabric is also available in a corner post. This adds rigidity to the chain link mesh and supports the bottom of the fabric. It is a good idea to leave an extra 3 3/4-inches between the posts for hinges.
Next, you will need to use a tension bar at the corners of your fence. After a few shovels, you will have to check the posts for plumb. When you are satisfied with their position, you can raise the fence to a smooth surface. While you are doing this, keep in mind that the fence should be a minimum of 10 feet high.
