The first step in preparing your fence for staining is to remove any debris or dirt from the surface. You can use a brush, roller or sprayer to do this. Make sure that you wear protective clothing and eye and ear protection. If you are using a sprayer, you should stand about 10 inches away from the boards to avoid damaging them.

You should also make sure that the wood is clean and dry. This includes the bottom two to three feet of the slats, where the stain will be applied. You should also remove any nails or staples that are protruding from the fence. If the wood is in poor condition, you may have to sand it before applying the stain.

You can use a high-pressure nozzle on a garden hose to clean the fence. However, the pressure should not exceed 2,000 psi. This is because the high pressure can damage the fence. For a less labor-intensive approach, you can use a low-powered power washer.

After you have cleaned the fence, you can apply a wood brightener. This is a product that will open the pores in the wood to allow for the stain to penetrate. It will also help correct the pH levels of the wood. It can be purchased at most home improvement stores. You should apply it according to the directions on the package.

Next, you can start applying the stain. If you have a sprayer, you should start by applying a thin layer of the stain to the horizontal slats. If you have a brush, you should use a wide-bristled brush to apply the stain. This brush will help you cover a wider area and eliminate lap marks.

Once you are finished with the stain, you should let the fence dry for several hours. The amount of time it takes depends on the humidity and air temperature. You should wait at least 72 hours to allow the fence to completely dry. If you want to get the stain to stick to the fence, you can apply a second coat.

To keep your wood from cracking, you can also apply a water-resistant or weather-resistant stain. There are many types of stains, including semitransparent and solid color stains. Semitransparent stains are best for penetrating the wood and blocking ultraviolet light. Alternatively, you can choose a solid-color stain, which lets some of the cedar grain show through. This type of stain can last for two to five years.

You should always read the label and technical data sheets on wood stain products before you buy them. You should also be careful not to over apply the stain. The amount of stain that is needed to cover the entire fence is different depending on the fence’s type and shape.
