What Nails to Use For Wood Fencing?

In order to make a wood fence sturdy and attractive, you need to use the right type of nails. The size, length and gauge of your nails will determine the strength of your fence. Getting the wrong type of nails can cause your fence to fall apart or split. Using the proper nail will ensure your fence remains strong and secure for many years to come.

Nails are often made of iron or aluminum. They are used for securing pickets and rails to a wood fence. Most nails have a round head. Some have rings around them to help keep them in place. There are also some nails that have barbs on the tip. While these nails are stronger than ordinary nails, they can be difficult to remove.

Another choice is using screws, which are typically more brittle than nails. But if you are using screws, you need to be aware that they aren’t always suited for wooden fences. Many of the chemicals in pressure-treated lumber can corrode some metals. If you are using screws for a fence, it is important to choose ones that are corrosion resistant. Stainless steel is the best option. Although it is more expensive, it is durable and robust. However, it is not rust-resistant.

Another popular choice is using ring-shank nails, which have concentric rings along their shaft. Ring shank nails provide a better grip on the wood. Depending on the density of the wood, the nails can be thick or thin. Be careful to choose a nail that is thick enough to hold the weight of the fence. Also, be sure to choose a ring shank nail that is long enough. It is a good idea to select a ring-shank nail that is at least halfway through the rail.

Round wire nails aren’t quite as strong as ring-shank nails. Although they do pass through the wood easily, they aren’t as sturdy. This means that they can’t take as much weight as a ring-shank nail. They can also easily break and bend under the weight of the pickets.

The best fence nails are those that are galvanized. They are coated with zinc to help them withstand rusting. Adding a layer of zinc to the nail protects it from moisture and oxygen. Galvanized nails can be purchased in several different gauges. Typically, they range from 2.65 mm to 50 mm. These nails are not as expensive as stainless steel.

In addition to being corrosion-resistant, nails are also smooth and glossy. Compared to screws, which tend to be brittle, nails are much more durable. They can be installed quickly and easily with a nail gun. A pneumatic nail gun can be set in less than a second, making it easier to get the job done quickly.

Regardless of what type of nails you choose for your fence, it is a good idea to test them out on a few pickets to make sure they fit properly. You should also consider a post hole digger, which is used to dig holes to the correct depth.
