What Size Metal Post For 4′ Wire Fencing?

The first step in building a fence is to calculate the amount of wire and posts that you need. This includes end, corner and line posts. Depending on the type of fence you’re installing, you may also need gates. Once you have the numbers, use a string to run through your property and mark the location of the corners and ends of your fence.

Wooden Posts for Fences

Regardless of the type of fence you’re building, it’s important to choose strong wooden posts that won’t rot or warp in the rain. You can find wood posts in lengths from 5-1/2 to 8 feet and in top diameters from 2-1/2 to 8 inches or more. A 4-inch post is twice as strong as a 3-inch post, and a 5-inch post is four times as strong.

Steel Posts for Fencing

In addition to the strength that comes with a steel post, they are also lighter in weight and easier to drive than wooden posts. They are also less likely to bend or be forced out of alignment by livestock crowding. Typically, they are shorter than wood posts and can be installed with or without bracing.

T-Posts for Fences

T-posts are used in combination with wire and come in a variety of heights. They are most commonly used for fences that are about three feet high, but can be used for taller ones as well. You can install T-posts using a hand-held post driver or a hammer.

With the T-posts in place, you can start laying the wire on your fence. This will allow you to figure out the proper number of fence posts that you need and the correct spacing between them. For most types of wire fences, a good guideline is to space them between 8 and 12 feet apart. This is especially true for barbed wire and woven wire.

Wire Mesh for Fences

After determining the amount of wire and posts that you need, you can start laying out the fence. This will help you keep your project on track and avoid errors. You can also use a wire mesh to plan out where you want the fence’s posts and gate to be placed.

The wire mesh should be set at least two inches deeper than the fence post. This will increase the holding power of the wire and decrease the risk of the mesh tearing or breaking.

You’ll need a fence gate to complete your wire fence project. You can build one yourself or you can purchase one from the manufacturer.

The size of the gate should match the height of the fence. It should also have a hinge to lock the gate in place. You can choose from a variety of different styles and sizes for your fence gate, including wooden or aluminum. Once you’ve chosen your gate, use shims to make sure it is level and plumb.
